From January 30, 1969 to September 2, 1970, Robert Martin was a soldier in the U.S. Army. When drafted, he and his wife were both practicing hospital pharmacists in their second year of marriage with a child on the way. After 16 weeks of Basic and Advanced Training and a 6-week stint of temporary duty at Fort MacPherson in Atlanta, he was sent to the Republic of Vietnam. His tour of duty in Vietnam lasted 12 months plus an additional 36 days (he extended his tour to 36 days to be eligible for discharge upon return to the United States). This book is about his coping with the challenges that he faced during his sojourn in the United States Army. Promised entrance into Field Artillery OCS (Officer Candidate School) upon completion of Basic and Advanced Training, he received orders for Infantry OCS, an invitation, which he immediately rejected, resulting in his shipment to Vietnam as a private soldier skilled in Artillery Fire Direction Control. Assigned to the 2/11th Field Artillery Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles, he was told his special skills were not needed. They also had no need for a pharmacist in an artillery battalion but the personnel officer asked him if he could type. Answering in the affirmative, he was assigned duties as Clerk for the Battalion’s Headquarters & Headquarters Battery. He served out his tour typing between mortar and rocket attacks. In this book, he tells of his day-to-day experiences and the effects they had upon him and his fellow soldiers. He tells of the decay in the soldiers’ morale and the increase in drug use as the war turned into a political football and the effects of anti-war protests in the U.S. were felt by the soldiers in Vietnam. He talks of coping and hanging on to his sanity in a world gone crazy around him. Knowing that every soldier who served in Vietnam has a different story to tell, the purpose of this book was to tell his own story about his time in the service and the effects it had on his life after the Army.

As Pat S. said in his review of Robert's book, I also served as one of the Fire Direction Officers in the same Artillery Battalion in Vietnam as Robert. Just about a year later serving at the same time as Pat although we were in different sections of the Battalion. Robert's book is a very good collection of what he went thru during his time in the Army. The book is very well written and easy to read. I was glad to get to meet Robert after reading his book. I consider him a fine person and a DGD.Product details

Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet Memoirs of a REMF Robert B Martin IV 9781523663972 Books Reviews
Another guy who doesn't know where he served. There has never been a Republic of South Viet Nam, this is an insult to >3 million of us who served in the Republic of Viet Nam, I'm not even going to read it, I'll be too mad at myself. Those of us who served in RVN, welcome home.
Just plain Outstanding. Bin thinking about this book for days after reading. Very well written with Beaucoup Info. I learned a lot that I din't know and renewed my memories long lost in the fog of time. It was like going up into the attic and looking thru old memory boxes. I could go on and on. Your research was extensive, very hard to find Info. Thanks for taking the time to write your book, "Welcome Home".
Like Robert Martin, I also went to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo for Basic Training. I ended up serving, as an Officer, in the exact same Artillery Battalion in Vietnam (albeit 1 year later) as did Robert. His book IMHO is a very readable collection of short stories. Although officers generally did not fraternize with enlisted men, I have NO reason to doubt the accuracy of the events described in Robert's book.
If you want a relatively short but accurate and descriptive book about an Army draftee's experience in Vietnam, then I highly recommend this book. .
If you're worried about proofreading, go teach an English class.
Pat S
This book was an accurate depiction of the process of training and preparing for Nam and gave his story of life in country. My memory of that time is hazy and it brought back a lot about basic and AIT.
I found this book to be a very easy read along with being very informative. I would highly recommend it to other Vietnam Vets as well as anyone who is interested in the life of a REMF.
